Rapid glacier retreat, heavy rain, and thousands of small tremors all came before the collapse. The authors argue a landslide monitoring and alert system could have warned ships in the fjord, but nothing like that runs at this scale in the US yet. With cruise traffic up there, that seems like an obvious gap.
